Joe Kubert depicted the first Tarot card to appear on the cover of a DC comic. (and possibly ANY comic)

The accompanying Kubert-drawn tale only depicts the Death card from the "Gypsy fortunetelling" deck. Tarot cards were the first graphic storytelling devices,. presenting characters and situations.  An argument can be made that they were the FIRST PROTO- COMIC- BOOKS...!!!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kubert family. The Comic Historian with Class, Blake Bell, says it better than I ever could at http://blakebellnews.blogspot.ca/2012/08/joe-kubert-my-memories.html

“Joe was one of the most important artists to ever work in comics, as evidenced just by the vast number of other artists who started off copying his work, learning from his work and — for a lucky group — attending his school,” - Official Kirby Bibliographer Mark Evanier

Kubert's Viking Prince tells Sgt. Rock about the time he went to Valhalla and asked Odin if he could marry a Valkyrior maiden!

Kubert gives a lesson in opening with a triptych. No wonder he opened a school!
