121 YEARS AGO TODAY Christopher Rule was born. He worked mainly during the Mostly Uncredited Era of Comics so it is impossible to quantify his contributions to the embryonic industry.

Rule inked the first Atlas/Marvel Kirby cover after the company-hopping Kirby returned from his 17 year hiatus.
Rule also inked the seven-page Kirby story that the cover promoted.

You could buy Kirby's 11th cover for 1957
And get 24 pages of Kirby story art. What a bargain for 12 cents. If you kept it in mint condition it would be worth $4000 now.

65 YEARS AGO TODAY

Kirby's 14th cover for 1951 was on sale.
So far Kirby had done all 9 covers for this title. Only 2 of the issues (including this one) did not have any interior art by him.

69 YEARS AGO TODAY

So far only one Kirby-covered comic for the month had shipped.
This brought the year-to-date total of new Kirby-covered comics for 1947 to 21. All but one of which also had Kirby interior art.

40 YEARS AGO TODAY

1976 was the last best year to be a collector of Kirby-covered comics. Two more hit the shops bringing his year-to-date total to 87.

That was more new Kirby covers than would be released in the next 5 years combined!!!

53 YEARS AGO - The Kirby influence?

Troll dolls became one of the United States' biggest fads from the autumn of 1963 through 1965.
    Actually Ulik the Troll was introduced in THOR #137 which didn't hit the shops until November 1966...
    For the next few years Ulik was practically a supporting character in the title. This page is from THOR #173 (1970).

74 YEARS AGO TODAY

 Kirby's 56th published cover was in the shops.
It was the 10th issue of the title to be Kirby covered - his longest streak at that point in Comics History!
And all ten issues also had Kirby interior art.

It had been released to most of the rest of the World nearly a week earlier and had already done $133 million in box office.  If you figure $10 for the average ticket price that is more than 13 million people.

After 10 months, 5 issues and 120 pages neither Lee or Kirby had come up with the anger-as-transformation-trigger for the Hulk yet.

It seems obvious now but in 1962 it was an idea still waiting to be thought.
