39 YEARS AGO TODAY

If you are in your forties this might have been your introduction to Kirby's work.
Along with WHAT IF #9, which had also hit the shops earlier in the week, 10 new Kirby-covered comics had shipped for 1978. Seven of them, including this one had 17 pages of Kirby story and art.

George Perez did the the interior art. For continuity's sake Joe Sinnott embellished everything.

These 2 new Kirby covers brought his 1970 total up to 8
This one also had 6 pages of new Kirby art increasing his total to 133 pages.
This one had 29 pages of reprinted Kirby/Chic Stone art.
It was nice of Marvel to comission a new cover instead of reprinting this one.

76 YEARS AGO TODAY

Even though the cover to CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS #3 was by Schomburg it had 46 pages of Kirby art. It lead off with a 17 page Kirby Red Skull story followed by 3 more Kirby-rendered tales.
These 2 were reprinted 25 years later in FANTASY MASTERPIECES #3.

The bad news is that the 20 pages of Kirby/Sinnott art would be edited down to 18 pages. Only 2 panels from this page were reprinted in MARVEL'S GREATEST COMICS #57

Kirby's only CAPTAIN AMERICA cover for 1970 hit the stores.
It was inked by Bill Everett and like all the 1970 CAPTAIN AMERICA comics it contained no interior art by the King.

56 YEARS AGO TODAY

 TALES TO ASTONISH #20 was historic for two reasons...

It had the longest story yet to appear in that title, a Kirby/Ayers 18 pager about a writer with a magic typewriter.

That left just enough room for a Ditko 5 page time travel tale, making TALES TO ASTONISH #20 the first issue with only two stories and the second issue with art by only Kirby and Ditko.

How could you not want to read the 19 page Kirby/Ayers story that goes with this cover?!
I was too young for this to be the cover that got me interested in totem poles as a child.

You could have purchased The 7th consecutive SGT FURY with a Kirby cover and Kirby interior art.

There were no new Kirby-drawn 1967 Captain America appearances for sale yet.

The lone Kirby-drawn Cap story that had been published so far that year was a 13 page reprint from 1941 in FANTASY MASTERPIECES #8.

It would still be about 2 months until Kirby had his first cover published but one of the nine new features mentioned on this cover was the five page "Solar Legion" by Kirby (he signed it Jack Curtiss). It would run for three issues.
