Despite the huge potential audience, according to Mark Evanier's KIRBY: KING OF COMICS, the Kirby written and drawn BOYS' RANCH did not sell well and was canceled after 6 issues.

47 YEARS AGO TODAY

For a quarter you could have bought SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN #141 with 22 pages of new Kirby artwork (he also wrote it!) including 3 pages of collages.


JIMMY OLSEN #141 also included a self-portrait of Jack Kirby, a reprint of the historic 13 page first appearance of the Newsboy Legion from 1942 and the cover of the comic it was from (STAR SPANGLED COMICS #7).  

DC waited 32 years to reprint JIMMY OLSEN #141.

Jack Abel was born. He became a Kirby inker after having been a penciler earlier in his career.

91 YEARS AGO TODAY

Mike Esposito was born. After assisting the legendary Hogarth on the Tarzan newspaper strip he was hired as a penciler by Stan Lee in 1950. He formed a comic company with Ross Andru in 1953 which went bust in 1954 when comics nearly went extinct.
After Kirby saved comics in the Sixties, Esposito's immortality was assured when Lee enlisted him into the Kirby Inker Army.

It was a good time to be a Kirby fan. 5 more comics with Kirby covers went on sale. These 2 also had 21 pages of interior Kirby art.

 

These 3 only had Kirby covers. That brought his total so far for 1964 to 60 covers!!!

Triptych Zero
After 23 years of honing his craft the King opens a comic with a full page panel followed by a double-page spread for the first time.  The historic FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #1 wasn't reprinted until 7 years later, the same month Kirby left Marvel for the second time.

   Some Golden Age art experts believe this cover is actually by Fred Ray, the great SUPERMAN cover artist of that era. It is a testament to Simon & Kirby's popularity in the Forties that DC would put their name on someone else's art.

the best-stocked retailers would have three DC comics with Kirby story art. Two of those comics would also have Kirby covers.
This was Kirby's 15th consecutive cover for ADVENTURE COMICSIt also had Kirby's 16th consecutive 10 page Sandman story for ADVENTURE COMICS.
